You’ve seen a lot of posts online about different types of copy, why you need to create great copy for your biz, and how you can use copy to convert your readers.

But there is one question on your mind.

What is a copywriter? And what do they do?

Well, you’ve come to the right place! I’m going to give you the lowdown on:

  • What is a copywriter?

  • What copywriters do?

  • Why hiring a copywriter will enhance your biz

So let’s get started!

WHAT IS A COPYWRITER?

When I tell people what I do for work, they automatically think of the © symbol that appears on the bottom of a website or on the inside cover of a magazine (sometimes they think I’m a website designer too, but that’s another story). However, that type of copyright and the copywriting I do are, well, miles apart.

But there is one similarity: the word “copy.”

That word may actually be what confuses people the most. But “copy” in the business world refers to anything that is written and published online or on paper. And the writer of that copy is called a copywriter.

All the copy on a website, a blog post, on Instagram, in an email, or in a magazine is called copy. We see it everywhere, and it’s one of the main ways we as a business communicate with the outside world.

There are many different types of copy:

  • Website copy

  • Sales copy

  • Blog copy

  • Ad copy

The list goes on…

And because of that, you will find different types of copywriters.

While most copywriters have experience writing all fields of copy, you will find that there will be copywriters for different types of copy. In fact, a copywriter that niches their work and focuses on a few types of copy will be excellent at what they do.

PRO TIP - If you are thinking about hiring a copywriter, find out what their expertise is; find out what type of copy they excel at, and if it’s the type of copy you need, you’ve found yourself the perfect copywriter. If you’re looking for web copy, brand strategy, brand concept writing, or monthly content writing retainers, then you’re in the right place! Let’s chat about what I can do for your business.

WHAT DO COPYWRITERS DO?

As mentioned above, copywriters are the artists behind the words on a high-converting website. They are the masters behind crafting persuasive sales copy and inspiring Instagram posts. They are the ones who write content for blogs and newsletters.

But the main role of a copywriter is to tell your brand story.

They tell it in a way that will sell or create a long-lasting relationship with your target audience.

As a business owner yourself, you may well be the copywriter of your own biz! You are the one writing all the copy and content for your brand. In that way, you could be likened to a copywriter.

However, the difference between a copywriter and you creating your own copy could be likened to the difference between a website designer creating a custom coded website and a virtual assistant using Wix to DIY their site *cringe*.

Copywriters, just like website designers, are trained in their field and will be able to craft copy that converts and builds relationships in a way that really resonates with your readers and your brand.

You may be thinking about how a copywriter can really do that for your brand. You are the one who knows your brand best, so shouldn’t you be the one to write the copy?

While that may be true, this is also one of the best things about a copywriter:

They possess the ability to create content that truly resonates with your brand. They can create content that sounds like you.

Amazing, right?

So you don’t have to worry about your content sounding like an outsider. Copywriters work hard to get to know your brand and your customers well before even putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard).

HOW WILL HIRING A COPYWRITER ENHANCE YOUR BUSINESS?

Two things go hand-in-hand when creating a successful business:

  1. The design and visuals of one’s brand

  2. The copy

As a website designer, you are definitely aware of how important visuals are for your brand! They are the very essence of a brand’s personality and voice. Without the perfect visuals and design, a brand could fail to make a good name for itself.

Well, it’s the same with one’s copy.

The visual design and the written word go hand-in-hand when it comes to creating a brand that will grow and evolve. Not only do you need to attract the attention of your audience with stunning visuals, but you need to capture their hearts with words that appeal to them.

That’s where an experienced copywriter comes in.

A great copywriter will be able to magnify your business and will help you connect with your ideal clients by using the top-tips and tricks of the trade. Copywriters have the natural gift of storytelling, so they will be able to create copy that tells your story and engages your readers.

Hiring a copywriter will help you:

Create Copy That Converts

Hiring a copywriter for your business will do wonders for your sales! If you are struggling to write the perfect landing page, sales pitch, or email, a copywriter will be the perfect match for you.

Copywriters who love writing sales copy have a knack at writing persuasively without coming across salesly or pushy - they know how to word things in a way that inspires readers to action without them feeling pushed.

This comes naturally to them, so offloading this task may just be what you need to increase your profit and income (psst, let’s talk).

Create Content That Builds Long-lasting Relationships

One of the best things about copywriters is that they will be able to write consistent copy that not only shows up but works up the hearts of your ideal clients. They will be able to build connections and trust between you and your target audience with stirring stories, informative tips, and creative social media captions.

So if you are trying to build up a rapport with your readers, a copywriter will totally make a success of that!

Manage Your Time So That You Can Focus On Your Work

Like many website designers and creative business owners out there, you may have a flair for writing. You may enjoy writing your own blog posts, social media captions, newsletters, the list goes on.

However, you may struggle with the time it takes to create good copy.

It isn’t easy balancing client work with your own work, and it always seems that our own blog posts get neglected or our subscribers miss a week of a well-needed email update. Yup! We sacrifice ourselves for our clients, and it should be that way!

But neglecting the very things that will make our business grow is a big no-no.

That’s why hiring a copywriter will be the perfect thing for you if you a struggling to create content for your business.

SO, WHAT NEXT?

Now you know what a copywriter is and what they can do for you, it’s time to go on that all-important search for the ideal copywriter!

Before you do that, here are a few things to consider:

What copy do you need help with? The copywriter you need will vary depending on what you need. So when on the lookout, make sure you know what you need and you ask the copywriter if they have experience with this/provide this service. Most copywriters will have a niche, so maybe find a copywriter that will be able to devote their very best skills to you.

Do you have the funds? If you want a good copywriter, it does come at a price. So I really recommend counting the cost so that you don’t wear yourself thin. I offer payment plans so that professional copywriting for brand and web designers can be easily accessible.

Are you clear on your message? Get clear on your story before off-loading to a copywriter. For them to really know you and your business, you have to know it in-and-out too. I highly suggest investing in brand strategy before offloading all kinds of copy to a professional so that you can be confident and clear in what you want.

And then you are good to go!
